Following the decision to reinstate the staircase in its original location in a Jacobean House, our research led to the discovery in the attic of one of the balusters from the original. The design evolved around the newly discovered baluster, resulting in the staircase shown above. Made in quarter sawn brown oak, this massive piece of joinery features treads 1200mm wide, with 225mm square newels. Each baluster was turned by hand, loosely following a full size drawing, resulting in subtle differences that enhance the hand-made feel. The timber was heavily distressed, being beaten with chains and bags of stones, with worm holes being drilled by hand and filled with wax and dirt. The timber was then fumed in ammonia, bringing out its character, and sealed and waxed, providing a practical and hardwearing finish that can only improve with age.
