The brief was to provide space for over 27,000 books, which equates to a little over 400 metres! It was decided that the layout of the library should also allow for dividing the books into various categories, and so the main part is split into eight main desk areas with projecting bays of bookcases forming the divisions as shown above left. Because of the sheer volume of books to be stored, the projecting bays pivot to reveal further storage as shown above right. The bookcases were made in Mahogany, with stone cornices and skirtings, and the columns were wrapped in leather to match the staircase handrail.
