During the recent restoration of Osborne House, it was decided to reinstate the Exhibition Quality Aubusson Carpet that was woven for the Drawing Room, and which had disappeared at some point during the beginning of the twentieth century.

The dimensions of the original carpet were established by an accurate survey of the room, which revealed the original fixings, still in place in the floor, and the design was recreated from contemporary black and white photographs and oil paintings. The study of another 150 carpets woven at the same date gave further clues as to the exact detailing of the decorative motifs. The colouring was taken from carpets exhibited in Paris in the 1840's.

This massive piece was woven in three sections, and cut around the columns and sewn together in situ.

Length 17.6M, Width 7.4M
